The Ark of the Covenant was an awesome and holy artifact. It represented the presence of Yahweh with His people. So when the Israelites took it into battle after being defeated by the Philistines, they thought God would surely help them wipe out their enemies. But things did not go according to plan. Their second defeat was worse than the first.
